In a March 15, 2011 article for TireReview.com, Al Cohn wrote how “Tires Play an Important Role for Fleets.” Here are some of his interesting points that apply to tires on just about any type of vehicle, including passenger cars.
1) A specific tread pattern will have an effect on tire performance and fuel economy. The more “open” tread designs are great for traction but not as good for fuel efficiency. A tread pattern with solid shoulders will always be better for fuel economy, but traction may take a hit.
2) You may know that maintaining proper air pressure is extremely important to maximizing fuel economy and tire service life, but did you know there are three primary reasons that tires lose air? They are:
- Osmosis through the tire casing. A tire can lose 1 to 4 pounds per square inch of pressure per month. - Tread area punctures. They can cause a loss of 2 to 3 psi or more per day. - A faulty or compromised valve core / stem.
3) Cohn also mentions the importance of keeping tires as cool as possible to maximize fuel efficiency. Low air pressures, driving too fast, and carrying a heavy load can all cause tires to run hot and lower a vehicle’s fuel economy.
