According to Bridgestone's TireSafety.com website three out of every four drivers wash their vehicles once a month, but only one in every seven checks his tire pressure that often. That's fewer than 15% of all drivers. And that's a scary number when you consider that tires are the only things between our vehicles and the road.
As underinflated tires roll, the heat within them increases. Excessive heat can be very damaging to tires, and can even lead to premature failure, which can then lead to deadly accidents. When your tire pressure is low, your vehicle can also be harder to handle. For these two reasons, your underinflated tires are a danger not only to you and your passengers, but to everyone else who may be near you on the road.
Don't "Eyeball" Your Tire Pressure
Never assume your tire pressure is correct just because your tires “look” fine. The Bridgestone site features an “interactive tire pressure demo” that shows how a tire looks at various pressures. Give the Demo a try and you'll see that your tires could easily be as much as 50% underinflated before the probelm becomes visibly apparent.
By the way, it doesn't take a rim leak or a nail in the tread to let the air out of your tires. Under normal conditions, tires can lose one pound per square inch of pressure each month. Tire pressure can also drop a pound for every 10 degree decline in air temperature. That's why it's so important to check all your tires – even the spare – at least once per month.
What's the Correct Pressure for My Tires?
You'll find the right pressure for your tires in your owner's manual or on the sticker on your vehicle's door jamb. Do not rely on the “maximum pressure” listed on the tires themselves.
