Rolling Resistance

The drag force required to put a free rolling tire into motion. Tires are not rigid, but flexible. During driving, tires compress and flex. This flexing absorbs energy and converts it into heat.

In order to reduce rolling resistance, manufacturers use special rubber compounds. Any reduction in the rolling resistance of the tire helps reduce fuel consumption. Since rolling resistance also increases with low inflation pressure, it's beneficial to check the pressure of your tires regularly.
