Ready for a shock?
In 2010, 32,999 people were killed, 3.9 million people were injured, and 24 million vehicles were damaged as a result of motor vehicle crashes.
The economic impact of those crashes: $277 billion.
What's perhaps most disturbing about these numbers is that so many of the accidents that led to the damage, death and injury could have been avoided.
According to a May 2014 report from the Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol, excessive speed and distracted driving were factors in 82% of traffic-related deaths, 50% of the injuries, and 55% of all the hard costs.
You've heard the messages many times before. Don't drink and drive. Obey the speed limit. Focus only on driving when behind the wheel. Hopefully, the tremendous physical, emotional and financial pain behind the stats above will drive home those messages.
More Steps You Can Take to Stay Safer on the Road
1) Have your brakes checked if they feel soft, if you hear unusual noises when braking, or if your brake fluid level is low.
2) Make sure your headlights and windshield wipers are in good working order.
3) Have your tire pressure and condition checked once per month.
4) Always wear your seat belt and insist that your passengers buckle up as well.
