The average headlamp lasts between 450 and 1,000 hours. That's quite a range. So, how do you know when it's time to have your headlights replaced? That's hard to say.
There are so many variables that affect the service life of individual headlights, from the thickness of their filament to the heat, vibration and electrical surges they have to endure. That's why most of us simply react to blown headlights rather than try to replace them before they die.
If you're going on a long road trip, you might want to change your headlights proactively to avoid having to drive without them. To determine how much life they have left, you could:
- Estimate the number of hours your headlights have been on. If you drive at night regularly, that may be relatively easy. Just don't forget to factor in how often you use them during the daylight hours.
- Try to notice if one or both seem dimmer. Do you use your brights more than you used to? That may be a sign that your headlamps are reaching the end of their service life.
